So… for those who are new here (and maybe old), I am a huge nerd. Like Marvel fan fighting Sherlock Holmes kind of nerd. And with being a nerd comes the constant desire to discover something new. For me, my journey started with anime and landed me straight in the land of Asian dramas- specifically k-dramas. I can literally write a whole post on why I am so obsessed if you want, but this is not that kind of post. With all the research done, I wanted to share some of my favorite recent k dramas that I believe are a must-see. I hope that you enjoy it!
Alright, let’s get to business. The first drama that I want to recommend is Vincenzo.
Vincenzo is about a consigliere of an Italian mafia who was raised in Korea and comes back to the country for some reason – something about gold that belongs to him in a building owned by a Korean mafia family. Basically, the gold and the people who are after it are the main plot point of this series.
This drama has Song Joong Ki, Jeon Yeo Bin, Kim Yeo Jin, Kang Ha Neul and Yoo Jae Myung!
I think this drama is worth watching because it tackles some social issues such as corruption, discrimination against immigrants, etc. apart from being super entertaining at the same time!
Mr. Queen is a historical-fantasy fusion drama that I am currently watching. It stars Kim Jung Hyun as Cheoljong, the 19th King of Joseon, and Shin Hye Sun as Bong Hwan, a beautiful chef from the modern era who gets trapped in the king’s body.
In this series, you will see how difficult it was to be a queen during the Joseon period since all those who are related to queens are treated with distrust by the people around them. You can also see how Cheoljong struggles between being a king and following his own desires while trapped in Bong Hwan’s body in every episode of this series.
If you love rom-coms, this is a great kdrama to watch. The story follows a girl who is insecure about her looks and has a secret she doesn’t want anyone to know. She eventually meets the guy of her dreams and falls for him…or does she? Her life gets more complicated when she ends up in a love triangle between two cute guys.
The show also explores friendship and family relationships and is entertaining from start to finish. This drama is based on the manga, and it does a great job of following the storyline! Even the characters look exactly like their characters in the manga. I really enjoyed this show and all the bittersweet moments.
If you’re looking for a show that will make you feel ALL the emotions from start to finish, this show is for you.
The Penthouse is set in Hera Palace, where the 1% live and call home. The story follows three women who share the same apartment building and how their lives are entangled together. The good thing about this drama is that it starts off as a revenge story about one mother who wants to seek justice for her daughter, but it evolves into something so much more than that.
The writing is just SO GOOD! There’s never a moment where I felt lost or confused because everything fell perfectly into place in every episode. You’ll also find yourself rooting for characters that are extremely villainous by nature because they have such strong backstories and motivations behind their actions. I was constantly on an emotional rollercoaster while watching this show and at times, I couldn’t even look at my screen because of all the tears rolling down my face!
Those are a few of my favorite kdramas so far that I have enjoyed. I have so many more that I would love to share with you. Comment below if you watch Asian dramas and which so far is your favorite!
